Three materials, three cleaning routines

Non-clumping litter absorbs liquid and eventually needs a full replacement. Clumping litter allows soiled clumps to be removed and the remaining bed topped up. Neither description tells you exactly how many weeks a bag lasts in your home.

Catsan Hygiene Plus is mineral and non-clumping. Cat’s Best Original uses wood fibre and clumps. Ever Clean Extra Hygiene Unscented is clumping clay. Do not merge a manufacturer’s scented, unscented and non-clumping variants into one price comparison.

Measure cost over a month, not just price per litre

Record the quantity bought, delivery charge and how much remains after 28 days. Divide the amount actually used by 28 to estimate a daily cost. If you test a different litter, keep the number of cats and trays recorded so the comparison remains interpretable.

A fictional £18 bag used over 30 days costs 60p daily. A £10 bag used in 12 days costs about 83p daily. Neither scenario predicts these products’ performance; it explains why a larger or dearer bag can still cost less to use.

Check the tray before buying a bulk supply

Automatic trays can require a specific material, grain size or cartridge. A wood-fibre litter that suits a normal tray may not work in a sifting machine. Use the machine manufacturer’s compatibility list rather than general retailer suggestions.

For a manual tray, a small first purchase reduces the risk of being left with a bulk bag your cat rejects. Keep cleaning routines and disposal consistent with the packaging and your local waste instructions. Do not infer that plant-based means it belongs in household food-waste collections.

Why there is no universal cheapest litter winner

We selected clearly identified variants across the main materials, not a measured odour league table. We have not run controlled dust, absorption, tracking or acceptance tests. Claims such as dust-free and lasts five weeks depend on the supplier’s method and conditions.

Unscented is a useful option if you wish to avoid added fragrance; it is not a treatment claim. We also avoid reproducing flushability claims as general UK disposal advice. Ever Clean explicitly directs disposal through household refuse rather than the toilet.

Keep six exact products and their units separate

The expanded set adds Catsan Natural Clumping, a wheat-milling by-product litter in 8 L and 20 L packs; World's Best Comfort Care Unscented, the current name for its corn-based Original Unscented variant; and Sanicat 7 Days Freshness Aloe Vera, a 4 L non-clumping attapulgite product.

Sanicat's seven-day wording is a manufacturer claim under stated one-cat, ventilated 30 x 40 cm tray conditions, not a CVP result. Keep litres and kilograms as published instead of converting them into a false like-for-like volume price. A four-week home log of purchased quantity, top-ups and complete changes is the useful ownership measure.
