Pet travel costs and paperwork

Plan the cost of travelling with a pet from Great Britain, with official requirements and clearly dated provider examples.

Make the full cost visible

A starting price is only part of the decision. These guides separate measured prices, individual provider examples and editable planning assumptions. Equipment comparisons explain recurring costs and limitations without claiming hands-on testing.

Start with your journey

Origin, destination, species, documents and travel dates affect the requirements. These guides do not replace the official guidance or certify a pet for travel.

Which journey are you making?

For accompanied pet dogs, cats and ferrets. Rules checked 10 September 2026; residency, destination and onward travel matter. This is not travel authorisation. Sale, rehoming, other species or pets travelling separately can need different rules.

GB resident: GB to Northern Ireland only

Free Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document (PTD), plus microchip. No vet visit needed to apply; the document lasts the pet’s lifetime.

Budget for: Travel fare and any pet/carrier charge; do not automatically budget for an AHC.

NI resident: returning from GB to Northern Ireland

DAERA says no PTD is needed; the pet must be microchipped.

Budget for: Confirm the carrier’s own arrangements and charges.

GB to NI, then onwards to Ireland or another EU country

The NI-only PTD route does not cover onward EU travel; check AHC requirements before departure.

Budget for: Issuing-vet quote and carrier charges for the complete itinerary.

GB to France or another EU country

AHC entry window: ten days. GOV.UK gives six months for onward EU travel and re-entry to GB; a new trip needs a new AHC.

Budget for: Certificate, any separately required appointments, both pet travel legs and return arrangements.

Entering or returning to GB from abroad

Documents and extra steps depend on origin and movement type. Use the official inbound checklist, not the outbound checklist in reverse.

Budget for: Approved route where required, paperwork and applicable appointment costs.

DAERA also asks for at least ten working days’ advance notification for air travel from GB into NI. Confirm the carrier’s conditions and check official guidance again before departure.
