Best cat carriers UK: top-opening options and value

A carrier should let you move your cat securely and clean up easily after an accident. Extra features are worthwhile only if the carrier still fits both the cat and the journey.

At a glance

Catit Cabrio is worth shortlisting for broad access, Ferplast Atlas Open for separate size options and Savic Trotter 1 for a simple carrier. Cats Protection favours sturdy handheld carriers over backpack styles.

Research-based comparison of published specifications, manuals and UK buying conditions, checked on 10 September 2026. We have not physically tested these products. Recommendations describe the use case each design suits; they are not clinical assessments or a claim to have tested every product. Amazon search links are not verified offers or stock checks. Options to compare

These are research-based comparisons, not hands-on tests or clinical endorsements. The best choice depends on your pet and home. Retailer links on this page are not affiliate links; availability and prices can change.

Owners prioritising access for vet visits

Catit Cabrio

Multiple opening options make it a useful model to inspect for handling and cleaning.

  • Bulkier than a basic small carrier.
  • Check every lock before carrying.
Sources: Catit · Catit

Owners seeking top access in a defined size

Ferplast Atlas Open 20

The manufacturer distinguishes size capacity rather than relying only on small/medium labels.

  • An 8 kg maximum does not guarantee room for every cat below that weight.
  • Deluxe and Open are different products.

A simple carrier for a cat that fits comfortably

Savic Trotter 1

A useful basic alternative when elaborate feeding and opening features are unnecessary.

  • Check access before purchase.
  • Not a backpack or crash-tested recommendation.
Sources: Savic

Allow comfortable movement without unnecessary bulk

Cats Protection recommends a sturdy, ventilated carrier that is easy to clean and lets the cat lie comfortably and adjust position. It also highlights top access and removable tops as useful features. We use those criteria before colour, styling or pockets.

A weight limit does not establish that a long or tall cat fits. Check internal room, the door opening and the weight you will carry including the carrier. For walking to the vet, try lifting the empty model in a shop if possible.

Atlas 10, 20 and 30 are not the same carrier

Ferplast’s Atlas Open listing covers several sizes: the stated maximum capacities are 5 kg, 8 kg and 12 kg for 10, 20 and 30 respectively. The Open and Deluxe versions should not be merged just because a retailer shortens the title to Atlas.

Catit lists Cabrio at 51 × 33 × 35 cm, with front and wider opening access. Check the current UK variant against the manufacturer page. For every model, inspect all clips and locks after assembling it.

Car travel and air travel need separate checks

A way to route a seatbelt is not evidence of a crash-test result. Follow the carrier and vehicle instructions. Likewise, airline-approved in an online title is not a guarantee that a particular airline accepts the dimensions, materials or route.

Do not assume a carrier comparison makes a pet eligible to travel. Ask the transport operator about its current requirements before purchase. For urgent illness or injury, contact your vet promptly and ask about safe transport rather than delaying care to buy equipment.

Why we shortlisted handheld carriers

Cats Protection advises against backpack-style carriers because many restrict movement and can be unstable during walking. We therefore prioritised accessible handheld designs with published supplier information.

The Independent’s home testing includes Catit Cabrio and a Ferplast Atlas Deluxe model. That supports inspecting those designs, but is not a comparative test of our Atlas Open or Savic selection. CVP has not tested latch strength, carrying comfort or crash performance.

Use the exact SKU, cat clearance and operator rules

Catit Cabrio colours use model numbers 41370, 41371 and 41372 but share a published 51 x 33 x 35 cm external size, 35 cm maximum cat height measured as directed by Catit, and 11.3 kg maximum weight. Catit does not publish a complete internal-dimension table on the checked page, so external size is not converted into invented usable room.

Ferplast distinguishes Atlas Open 10 (73015099W1, 5 kg), 20 (73016099W1, 8 kg) and 30 (73017099W1, 12 kg). A weight ceiling does not guarantee body-length or doorway fit. Seatbelt routing is not crash certification, and airline suitability must be confirmed with the particular operator and route before purchase.

  • Excluded: No crash-test claim from a seatbelt-routing feature.
  • Excluded: No airline-approved claim without the named operator, route and current acceptance check.
  • Excluded: No internal-size inference where only external measurements and weight limits are published.

Replacement frequency is your assumption unless independently measured. Keep kilograms and litres distinct. This total excludes subscriptions and electricity unless you include them in additional charges.

Worked arithmetic example

Illustration only: a £100 delivered product plus 6 replacement packs at £5 totals £130. This is not a product offer or lifespan estimate.

Method: multiply each price by its quantity, round each line to the nearest penny, then add. No inflation or unentered charges are assumed.
