Use times, not just calendar dates, for the return visit

Illustrative timing: for entry to Great Britain at 16:00 on Saturday, the 24–120 hour window runs from 16:00 Monday to 16:00 Friday, using the same time zone for both timestamps. A Thursday appointment has more delay margin than one at the edge of the window. Have the treating vet record the actual date and time correctly.

Recalculate if the crossing changes, accounting for UK/France time-zone differences. The spending comparison also needs any repeat appointment or extra night caused by that change; the original pet supplement does not cover them.

Prepare the outbound paperwork

Check your dog's microchip and rabies records with an issuing vet. Current GOV.UK advice tells residents of England, Scotland and Wales not to use a pet passport, even one issued in the EU. Obtain the appropriate AHC for the trip.

The certificate's entry window is ten days; current guidance gives six months for onward EU travel and return to Great Britain. A later new trip needs a new document. Those periods do not remove the need to keep vaccination cover valid.

Book the return vet visit before the last day

For return from France, GOV.UK requires a vet-administered tapeworm treatment no less than 24 and no more than 120 hours before entry to Great Britain. The record needs the date and time, product details and vet authentication.

Choose an appointment with some margin for a delayed crossing. A changed arrival time can put the trip outside the permitted window. Ask the vet and carrier to confirm what to do if your schedule changes.

Separate the dog supplement from the holiday price

The £48 return pet charge is not a LeShuttle vehicle ticket. Compare complete bookings for your dates and ask accommodation providers about per-night, per-stay and cleaning charges. Check whether all rooms allow dogs and whether there are size or number restrictions.

For two dogs, some certificate providers share administrative costs while crossing charges remain per pet. Obtain the household total rather than doubling every item in the one-dog example.

Compare taking the dog with suitable care at home

Set the additional travel cost beside the total for boarding or home care for the same dates. Include appointment travel, extra stopovers and any itinerary restrictions. The cheaper total is only useful if the arrangement suits your dog.

Longer trips: resolve conflicting return-document wording

Checked 10 September 2026: GOV.UK states six months for AHC re-entry to Great Britain, while LeShuttle’s return-document list still says four months. We use the government guidance for the stated validity period, but this does not guarantee carrier acceptance.

If your return falls between four and six months, show both sources to the issuing vet and carrier before booking and ask them to confirm the documents for your exact dates. Keep that confirmation with your booking. Also recheck vaccination validity and any required return appointment; a certificate period does not override other requirements.

One French return-visit tariff: ask for the total including the product

Groupe de Santé Animale du Blavet lists “Départ Angleterre” at €43.50 plus the worming product. Its Brittany tariff was updated 1 June 2026 and is tax-inclusive. The product amount is not published, so €43.50 is not an all-in appointment price.

This is one provider example, not a French average or a claim that its branches are nearest your port. Ask the practice to confirm the complete service and price for your return itinerary; keep the timing and record requirements above separate from price comparison.

Taking pet food to France: check the outward rule

For travel from Great Britain, EU/French rules generally prohibit personal imports of meat, milk and products containing them. The EU describes a narrow exemption for medically required special pet feed below 2kg, with packaging and pre-opening refrigeration conditions; it is not a general allowance for ordinary pet food.

Check the official rules for the exact ingredients and packaging before packing. Do not assume plant-only food is automatically exempt from every import rule: French Customs separately controls plant products. These are border requirements, not advice to change your pet’s diet.

Bringing pet food back from France: a different rule

GOV.UK currently prohibits pet food from the EU containing meat or other animal products from pig, cow, sheep, goat or deer. Food with other ingredients, such as chicken, may be brought in up to 2kg per person when commercially packaged with the manufacturer’s name and address.

The separate health-related-food exception has additional conditions, including your pet accompanying you and evidence of need. Check the official page again before departure; the outward France rule does not establish what you can bring back to Great Britain.
