Compare GPS with GPS

Use PitPat Dog GPS Tracker and the exact Tractive dog model you would buy. PitPat Activity Monitor is a different device. Tractive models and plan options also differ, so an old DOG 4 sale should not inherit DOG 6 specifications.

Start by listing your required features: finding your dog now, notifications, shared access and use abroad. Verify each against the selected plan. Exclude optional features you would not pay for independently.

Work out the break-even point

Use this formula: extra upfront cost of the included-connectivity tracker divided by the paid tracker’s annual subscription. It gives an approximate number of years before cumulative spending catches up, assuming prices remain constant.

Illustration only: if one device costs £150 including connectivity and another costs £50 plus £60 a year, the £100 purchase difference is recovered in about 1.67 years. At three years the totals are £150 and £230. These are editable planning numbers, not current product quotes. Add renewal changes and replacement hardware if they apply.

Annualised cost and cash due today are not the same

A two-year subscription paid upfront should be counted in full in the initial cash budget. Dividing it by 24 is useful for comparison, but does not turn it into a monthly cancellable plan. Record the cancellation and renewal conditions before purchase.

Also compare loss replacement, warranty and any optional membership independently. Included connectivity is a manufacturer promise about the service; it does not make a physical tracker indestructible or cover every replacement scenario.

When each model is the better shortlist

Prioritise the included-connectivity model when avoiding renewals is a major preference and its location function works well on your routes. Prioritise the subscription model when a specific verified feature justifies the extra cost to you.

Do the same real-world checks whichever you choose: attach it securely, test a new live session away from home and check notifications with the phone locked. We have not run a controlled head-to-head location test and cannot name a universal winner for accuracy.

Compare when cash is charged and what cancellation changes

Tractive hardware and service are separate: choose a plan for each tracker and compare the full amount billed, not only a monthly equivalent. The manufacturer says cancellation prevents automatic renewal while access continues until the already paid term ends. Record that term and renewal date in a multi-year comparison.

PitPat GPS includes connectivity in the hardware price, but that does not remove replacement risk: its sealed battery cannot be replaced by the owner or PitPat. A fair cash-flow comparison therefore includes Tractive hardware plus plan renewals versus PitPat hardware and a possible future whole-device replacement, without inventing a battery lifespan.

Verify history, geofences and returns during the allowed window

Tractive documents 24 hours of Location History on Basic and up to 365 days plus export on Premium. Virtual Fences can notify on entry or exit, but the tracker needs both satellite positioning and cellular coverage to send locations. History is built from recorded updates, and shared family members can see the same timeline; it is not a continuous, independently verified route record.

The UK DOG 6 page states a 30-day money-back guarantee. PitPat’s current standard Dog GPS page states a one-year warranty and free six-week returns, including used, scratched or damaged trackers and shipping, but does not provide a comparable primary-source promise for route-history retention or user-defined geofence alerts. During the applicable window, test initial fix, live updates, a real boundary crossing, notification delivery, history visibility and the return procedure in the places that matter.
