Pet food subscription costs: compare the renewal, not just the trial

A discounted box is a poor guide to what feeding will cost over a year. Compare the same pet, daily portion and delivery interval, then separate the trial from the recurring bill.

Published subscription offers use incompatible units: tins, daily portions and personalised boxes. Start with the undiscounted cost of enough food for your pet per day. Where a brand only provides a personalised quote, there is no honest universal monthly price.

This compares published pricing structures, not product performance or nutritional superiority. CVP has not fed or tested these products and has not collected identical-pet checkout quotes.

Separate food consumed from money leaving your account

Constructed example: a £21 14-day trial followed by £84 boxes every 28 days costs £1,074 for 365 days of food consumed at those rates. If you pay on day 0, then days 14, 42 and every 28 days through day 350, you pay for 13 renewal boxes: £1,113 cash during days 0–364. The final box still contains food for the following year.

The calculation assumes the trial covers exactly 14 days and payments occur on those stated days. Use your actual charge dates, delivery fees and any remaining stock. The difference is timing and food carried forward, not an unexplained surcharge.

Compare the renewal amount, not the saving badge

Constructed arithmetic, not either brand’s price: a product with £40 RRP and a £36 sale price costs £34 with a 15% RRP discount, not £30.60. Record the final recurring item price once, then add delivery; do not apply the advertised saving twice.

Harringtons’ page uses both “at least 15%” and “up to 15%”, so check the selected product’s actual renewal price. A pause deadline is not evidence of the cancellation cutoff. Save the next charge date and the confirmation of any change.

Use a first-year and an ongoing-year calculation

Constructed scenario: a 14-day trial at £1.50/day followed by 351 days at £3/day costs £1,074 in the first year. At an unchanged £3/day, a full ongoing year costs £1,095. Neither is the £547.50 obtained by multiplying the temporary trial rate by 365.

Calculate each discounted period separately, then add delivery, recipe supplements and food bought outside the plan. A 28-day delivery cycle creates about thirteen boxes a year, not twelve.

Compare enough food, not equally sized packs

Different foods and recipes can have different energy densities. Matching two tins with two trays is not necessarily matching a day's food. Use the feeding information for the actual product and your pet's needs; if a therapeutic diet or medical condition is involved, discuss any change with your vet.

Keep full-feeding and topper plans separate. A cheap plan that supplies only part of the diet must include the cost of the remaining food in the comparison.

Put convenience into the decision

Check freezer space, pack size after opening, delivery-day flexibility and what happens if a box arrives while you are away. A larger order can reduce the per-pack price but becomes poor value if you cannot store or use it.

For several pets, calculate the combined recurring bill using their separate portions. A multi-pet discount does not justify feeding the same quantity to each animal.

Capture the recurring order before starting

Save the order summary showing portions, recipes, next charge, next dispatch and cancellation cut-off. Confirm whether pausing a subscription also stops a box already being prepared. Keep any discount expiry separate from ordinary price changes.

Compare the subscription with equivalent non-subscription food as well. Our brand pages explain published terms; they do not award health or taste ratings from marketing claims.

Years: cancel before the delivery cut-off

Years asks for changes or cancellation at least three days before the scheduled delivery. Its payment help says charging happens two days before delivery and the order cannot be changed after payment. These are delivery and payment milestones, not a promise that cancellation remains possible until dispatch.

In your account, use Delivery on mobile, then Stop Plan and Stop, completing the remaining steps. Repeat for each plan you want to end; pausing is a separate option. Check your next delivery and payment dates. The public instructions do not specify an exact clock time or time zone, so do not assume a midnight deadline.

Sources checked 11 September 2026. These instructions do not establish a universal post-trial renewal interval or account-specific price. Confirm your own order summary and any offer conditions.

Compare two payment schedules

Compare the trial, renewal and delivery costs in your two food quotes. Only compare portions and feeding coverage you understand; a lower cost does not mean equal nutrition.

Use your actual quotes and billing intervals. Amounts stay in your browser. The horizon starts with a payment on your chosen date and excludes a renewal exactly at its end. Include other consumables separately; do not treat these totals as every possible ownership expense.

Option 1
Option 2
Worked example and limitations

Illustration only: starting 1 January 2027, a £28 payment every 28 days produces 14 payments (£392) before 1 January 2028. A £28 calendar-month payment produces 12 payments (£336). The first option also supplies periods extending beyond the horizon: cash paid is not the same as food consumed or like-for-like value.

The same price is assumed at each renewal unless you enter a different first payment. No later price changes, cancellation refunds, partial-period refunds, interest or inflation are predicted. Calendar-month dates keep the original day where possible and use the month’s last day otherwise. Confirm the provider’s actual billing rules.
