Microchip Implantation costs explained
Microchipping is a quick, one-off procedure that links a pet to its owner's contact details on an approved database. It is among the most comparable prices in veterinary care, and this guide explains what the fee above usually covers and the small print worth checking.
What the price usually includes
The fee usually covers the implant itself and the few minutes of professional time needed to place it, along with instructions for registering or transferring the microchip record.
The main variable is database registration: some practices include initial registration in the fee, while others leave the owner to complete it, and the database itself may charge for later changes such as transfers of keepership or premium record options.
Microchipping is a legal requirement for dogs across Great Britain and for cats in England, so for many owners the question is not whether to microchip but where it is cheapest and most convenient to have it done. Rescue pets often arrive already chipped, needing only a transfer of details.
Why prices vary
Because the procedure is short and standardised, the price spread shown above is driven mostly by local overheads and by what surrounds the implant: whether a consultation fee applies, and whether registration is bundled.
Some practices run microchipping alongside another appointment, such as a vaccination visit, at little or no extra charge, while a stand-alone appointment may attract the full fee. Councils, charities and rescue centres sometimes offer free or low-cost microchipping events, which widens the effective range further.
Sedation is rarely needed, but for a small number of animals it may be recommended, and that would be quoted separately rather than being part of the standard fee.
Questions to ask your practice
Useful questions include: Does the price include registration on the database, or do I complete that myself? Is there a database fee for transferring an existing chip into my name? Can the chip be placed during an appointment we already have booked?
It is also worth asking which database the practice registers chips with, since keeping details up to date on the database is the part of the system that actually reunites lost pets with owners.
Ways to manage the cost
Microchipping is a modest one-off cost, and the cheapest reputable route is often a charity or council event, or having the chip placed during an appointment that is happening anyway. Some puppy and kitten packages include it.
The recurring discipline is free: keeping your contact details current on the database. If you move house or change number, updating the record promptly costs little or nothing with most databases and protects the value of the original fee.
This guide covers costs and questions to ask — it is not veterinary advice.

Methodology
This guide uses source-backed current prices from the CompareVetPricing dataset snapshot dated 2026-05-10. Prices must be publishable and quality-checked before they are used in medians or ranges. Prices can change, clinical recommendations vary, and this page is a comparison aid rather than a quote.
